James R. Gavin III, MD, PhD is clinical professor of medicine at Emory University School of Medicine and at the Indiana University School of Medicine. He serves as CEO and Chief Medical Officer of Healing Our Village, Inc. He served as senior scientific officer at the Howard Hughes Medical Institute, and as president of the Morehouse School of Medicine. Dr Gavin was chief of the Diabetes Section at the University of Oklahoma. He is a member and past president of the American Diabetes Association (ADA), member of the National Academy of Medicine (formerly the IOM), the American Society of Clinical Investigation, and the American Association of Physicians. He is Chairman Emeritus of the National Diabetes Education Program. He serves as a Director of Baxter International, Inc., and Baxalta Pharmaceuticals, Inc. He is past national program director of the Harold Amos Medical Faculty Development Program of the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation (1993-2013), and Chairman of the Board for The Partnership for a Healthier America. He is also Chairman of the Data Safety Monitoring Board for the VADT. He has published over 250 articles and two books.
