Obesity is now recognized as a chronic illness that requires ongoing treatment, much like diabetes, hypertension, and hyperlipidemia. This is now encompassed by Obesity Medicine, the fastest-growing new specialty. In this keynote talk, Dr. Louis Aronne discusses multidisciplinary approaches to combating obesity, including prescription of diet, exercise, and behavioral modification. He will further review pharmacologic therapies, devices, and surgeries that can be considered as adjuncts to lifestyle interventions in appropriate patients.

Drs. Sanchez and Brosco, an endocrinologist and a pediatrician specializing in childhood obesity, provide guidance for primary care clinicians on assessment, referral, lab tests and prevention for pediatric patients with or at risk for obesity.

Dr. de la Cruz-Muñoz, an expert in laparoendoscopic and bariatric surgery, will review evidence regarding the treatment of obese patients with uncontrolled type 2 diabetes with bariatric surgery.

The rate of childhood obesity has reached almost epidemic proportions in the recent years. Dr. O’Connor will review the current guidelines from health organizations, such as the American Academy of Pediatrics and the American Heart Association, regarding screening, assessments and recommendations for lifestyle behaviors associated with childhood obesity and appropriate screening for obesity-related medical conditions among youth. She will discuss evidence- based behavioral change strategies for the prevention and treatment of overweight and obesity that can be employed in pediatric primary care clinics.

Pediatric Obesity: A Practitioner’s Guide to a Community Problem

Obesity in childhood is associated with multiple comorbidities and one out of every 3 children is classified as obese or overweight by their 5th birthday. This program will review the epidemiology and etiology of obesity in childhood. Participants will be able to discuss behaviors within the family that can reduce the risk of obesity as well as discuss community based strategies for childhood obesity.
